Things to Consider Before Adopting

1.  Why do you want a pet?

Don't forget to ask yourself this simple question before you get a pet! Some pets may be with you 10, 15, even 20 years which is why it so important to consider the long term commitment.

2.  Do you have time for a pet?

Dogs, cats, and other animal companions require food, water, exercise, care, enrichment, and companionship every day of every year.

3.  Can you afford a pet?

The costs of pet ownership will vary from pet to pet, but proper animal care comes with a significant cost. Some things you may want to consider are veterinary care, food, licenses, training (if needed), grooming, toys, litter, accessories, etc.

4.  Are your living arrangements suitable for the animal you have in mind?

Choose an animal that can accommodate your living arrangements.  Consider species, size, and energy level of the pet that would be the ideal fit for your home. Their needs are as important as yours.

Many rental communities don't allow pets or have restrictions on species, breeds, or size. Make sure you know the rules and restrictions before you bring a companion animal home.

5.  Are you considering the best pet for your lifestyle?

Consider where you are in your life, and which type of pet would fit best with your lifestyle.  Do you have small children?  Are you a student?  Do you have allergies?  Do you have friends with animals?  Is your household active or more laid back?

Considering all of the aspects of your life when choosing a pet will help ensure long lasting happiness for you and your animals.

6.  Finally, are you prepared to fall in love?

When you adopt a pet, you are committing to care for the animal for his or her lifetime. Sharing your life with a pet will bring many rewards and beautiful memories as long as the proper research and preparation are done.
